JENSEN (Decadance, Krush Club)
In 1998, at age 14, I first encountered the art of dj’ing.
A friend took me to a recordstore in Ostend where I discovered I had a deep interest in Hip Hop. Back then I listened to music by: A Tribe Called Quest, Mobb Deep, Sunz Of Man, Blade, etc. To get new vinyl, I was limited to that one store, but at least it was a start. A little later I really got into drum’n’bass and spent a lot of time and money in Outland Records and Fat Beats in Amsterdam. Tracks by Dillinja and Dom&Ronald always got me going. All of my free time was dedicated to playing and taping music at home. But that was about to change when I met Ya’Mo, a dj who played groove and filtered house at his own local parties. Those were some serious times! My interests naturally evolved to house music and I started mixing tracks from labels like Euka-Tech, Tango, NRK, etc. Soon I got the chance to do a monthly gig at Friday Sessions and was able to soak up more of the deeper side of house: Masters At Work, Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak, Kenny Hawkes, etc.
In the summer of 2003 it was time to set up my own party called MasterMinds. I invited such Belgian jocks like Raoul (Swirl People). September and October 2005 saw me starting to play Mondays at the infamous Club Decadance in Ghent on their Young Talent Nights. Soon they were booking me on Wednesdays and Fridays as well to do warm-ups for international dj’s like Kenny Larkin, Boo Williams, Green Velvet, etc. That same year I moved to Ghent and moved in with another house enthusiast called DJ Bugsy. We decided to join forces and start throwing wild parties at our house, playing 4 decks and inviting people like John Larner, Justin Long, Slater Hogan, etc. Soon we had more people in our home than we could handle and decided to start looking for a bigger venue. Not much later we found a great location and with a little help from our friend Jan (Jack’n’Jazz) we founded What’s Cookin’? During the first editions our nights featured guests like Big Hair, Red D & Lady Lynn, Amir Javasoul and local heroes like Cheez, Jonni Gratts, David Foyh, Ricardo,Yann, etc.
Bugsy and I had great sets there and really honed our skills with these nights.
Right now we’re moving the party from Vooruit to ICC, one of the biggest venues in the city. With our 3 years What’s Cookin anniversary we had Joe Claussell at our side. In 2006 I became a resident DJ at Club Decadance, a residency I’m enjoying till this day. My old friend Ya’Mo and I even had our own little concept called “Nasty” where we invited such guests like Greenskeepers Live, Trevor Loveys, Troydon & Jay West. One year later, in 2007, I started a Bi-monthly gig at the famous club H2O in Pecq. I’ve also played at the Switch Studio’s several times on the famous aroma radio show hosted by Raoul (Swirl People) and before that on Discover the DJ. From this September on I will announce a new party concept at Club Decadance. It will be all about strong rooted house music. That’s what we need!!!
